Honoring Those Who Served
The Origins of Veterans Day
Veterans Day traces its origins to November 11, 1918, when an armistice brought an end to the fighting in World War I. The agreement took effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
Originally known as Armistice Day, November 11 became a day to remember the sacrifices of those who served during World War I and to celebrate the hope for lasting peace.
In 1938, Congress established Armistice Day as a federal holiday. Following World War II and the Korean War, the holiday was expanded to recognize American veterans of all wars.
In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation officially changing the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day, honoring all American veterans who have served their country.
Why We Honor Our Veterans
Veterans Day is more than a date on the calendar. It is a national expression of gratitude to the brave men and women who have answered the call to serve in the United States Armed Forces.
We honor our veterans for their courage, their commitment to duty, and their willingness to make sacrifices in defense of our nation and its freedoms.
Whether serving during times of war or peace, at home or abroad, America’s veterans have played an essential role in protecting our country and strengthening our communities.
Their service represents a legacy of patriotism, dedication, resilience, and selflessness that continues to inspire future generations.
On November 11, we proudly recognize every generation of veterans and every branch of our military.
